About Kalai

Kalai is a fourth generation Tamil born into the Sri Lankan tea plantation industry , which was started as a part of British colonisation.

I met Kalai when I was travelling around Sri Lanka - he is a hell of a tour guide. I also had the privilege of hearing Kalai’s story.

Although he would love to do something else with his life, Kalai left school after year 8 to help support his family. He was schooled in Tamil, without access to the country’s national language, Sinhalese, or English for that matter (although he is very good at it, and is determined to learn at least one word/phrase a day). The dearth of opportunity has spun a wheel that is almost impossible to get off of. I am starting this website for him to help him get closer to creating the life he wants, starting with the construction of a home for his family of 7 (which includes his parents, siblings, their spouses and their kids).

A one bedroom hut sleeps 6 Although the house next door Kalai s late grandfather s is empty the tea plantation owner will not let the family use it This is their only bed

Life inside the Village

Human Needs

Kalai shows us where they drink and bathe from - a well in the middle of the village, which has many things floating around in it. They don’t sanitise or filter - that is so incredibly western.

Your Impact

You can donate to a cause - or you can literally just book a tour for your time in Ella and contribute to making the difference to a family living in poverty, which will affect generations to come.
